NATURAL DYES

Our natural dyed products are always pre-treated to make sure the dye will stick to the fabric well. However, please be aware that throughout the time the colour can slightly change or fade. Each natural dyed item is also unique and will look slightly different. To us, that is the beauty of natural dyeing.

The colour may react to some deodorants and detergents. This can be because some natural dyes react to different pH levels. Therefore we recommend to hand wash them with pH neutral soap.  Please, don't dry clean the garments.

We source our natural dyes from Verfmolen de Kat, Ecological Textiles,  AMA herbal and our own production.

Pomegranate peel

A natural dye sourced from Punica Granatum (Pomegranate Fruits).

We like working with this dye as it is an agricultural by-product. The peels of pomegranate fruits could be collected and used instead of being  thrown away.

The fruit has been used throughout history in the Mediterranean and Asia.

This dye is rich in tannin and therefore works incredibly well with plant fibers such as cotton and linen.

The colours range between yellow, green and grey shades depending on the mordant and whether iron is added.

CUTCH

This natural dye is extracted from the heartwood of the Acacia Catechu tree which grows in India and parts of Southeast Asia. It is often a b-product from the production of kattha.

In India, cutch has been used as a dye since ancient times.

To create an extract, the wood is soaked in water until the liquid thickens. Then it is cooled, pressed, and dried until it can be turned into powder.

This dye creates beautiful warm browns, dark browns and grey colours depending on the mordant and whether iron is added.

Myrobalan Fruit

The grounded nuts of the Terminalia Chebula tree are used to create this dye extract.

This tree grows in India and is very commonly used throughout history as a  natural dyeing source for them.

This dye is rich in tannin and therefore works incredibly well with plant fibers such as cotton and linen.

This extract is widely used through natural dyeing processes. It can funtion as a pretreatment and as a dye, it is often used to overdye fabrics as well.

It creates amazing yellows, greens, and very dark grey tones depending on the mordant and whether iron is added.
